Production of ethanol through coconut husk

Students from UFES (Federal University of Espírito Santo) conduct studies on technology that provides biofuels production at the base of the coconut shell. The material that would be thrown away is reused and transformed into ethanol. The forecast is that production will arrive at an industrial level and be automated in the next five years.

According to the IBGE's 2017 Agricultural census (Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics), the annual Coco Harvest of the Holy Spirit exceeds 13 million and the number of producers is more than 2800. Teachers of the Federal University of Espírito Santo, believe that the production of biofuel through the coconut shell is a good way, since if it is discarded it contaminates the soil.

According to information, the ideal is that within five years the production will stop being manual and become automated so that the technology is used by the rural producer. Other organic materials such as coffee straw may also be sources of ethanol production, but the manufacture of biofuel made from the coconut shell and the straw is more time consuming, as it is still done manually and the material still needs pre-treatment To break down the cellulose and produce the ethanol.
