Government approves CNPE resolution for decarbonization

President Jair Bolsonaro decided to approve a resolution of the National Energy Policy Council (CNPE) that defined the annual decarbonization targets. The resolution is part of Renovabio, a program that entered into force at the end of 2019, to encourage biofuels. The decision and details are published in the Official Gazette (DOU).

The act foresees a target of 14.53 million units of Decarbonization Crétido (Cbio) by 2020. Each Cbio means that one tonne of CO2 has been avoided into the atmosphere. In the previous resolution, the target was Cbio 28.7 million. The decrease in value would be a consequence of the impacts of the coronavirus pandemic.

In addition, the act also provides for authorization to reduce the individual target of the fuel distributor, provided for in the Renovabio Law, following regulations of the National Agency for Petroleum, Natural Gas and Biofuels (ANP).
