Offshore vessels will gain 4G connectivity

Offshore vessels of the North, Norwegian and Barents Seas 4G connectivity through satellites and fiber networks. The initiative was from satellite operator Inmarsat with the communications specialist without wire, Tampnet.

The project aims to improve the sending of information between offshore vessels and the coast, but can also be adopted by fishing boats and ferries operating in the area. The service, called Fleet LTE, uses communications low latency and high-speed data, available through a point of dedicated to satellite terminals.

Inmarsat's Vice-President of Maritime and Offshore Fisheries, Eric Griffin, considers connectivity crucial to offshore routine. "Especially in the field of high-risk decision-making, where actions are needed in such as remotely operated vehicles or detail protection in the seabed conditions," he says.
