Oil on the coast: Magnetic material would be solution

According to a study by researchers at the University Federal Of São Paulo (UNIFESP) and Federal University of São Carlos (UFSCar), Magnetic materials can aid in oil removal on coastal beaches Brazilian. According to the information, the project will be tested soon in Ceará.

Laboratory tests show that the materials would be able to remove about 80% of crude oil and other types of oil from the surface of the water. According to the research, these components would be made by ferromagnetic particles and biomass residues. “These particles not only allow the cleaning of beaches but also the recovery of oil by companies in the event of leaks. Another advantage is that they are environmentally friendly, as they are made of naturally found compounds in nature,” said Georgia Tobuto, a professor at Unifesp, a campus of Diadema.
