Pemex has high number of deaths by Covid-19
Last Tuesday (15), Pemex reported that 202 employees and five outsourced died due to Covid-19 so far. According to data reviewed by Bloomberg, no other company reported deaths that came close to that number.
A Spokeswoman for Pemex did not comment on the situation. The company has previously claimed that it has taken measures to protect the virus, including cleaning up workspaces and removing some workers from offshore platforms.
According to Silvia Ramos Luna, secretary general of the National Union of Oil Technicians and Professionals, the high number of deaths may be a consequence of the difficulty of social distancing within oil rigs, and Pemex may have been slow to adopt protective measures, such as sending workers home. In addition, many employees have pre-existing health conditions that may have contributed to the problem.
