Petrobras wants to focus on Rio-SP and states resist

Petrobras recently announced that it intends to focus its activities on the Rio-São Paulo axis, selling its assets in other regions, and state governments in the North, Northeast and South have been reacting against the decision. The state justified the choice for the location of the pre-salt. In order to get out of these regions, the oil company will have to negotiate environmental, labor and tax debts.

There are 164 oil and gas production areas of the state-owned company scattered throughout the country, and only 16 of them are located on the Rio-São Paulo axis. Petrobras says its departure will make room for private sector investments in the regions, but representatives say it will deepen regional inequalities in Brazil. Deputies and representatives of the governments of six states launched last month the campaign "Petrobras, fica!", through the Joint Parliamentary Front in Defense of Petrobras in Congress, which has met virtually.
