Q&G: Government includes 'shale' exploration project in PPI

According to the publication in the Official Gazette of the Union on Wednesday (6), President Jair Bolsonaro signed the decree that qualifies a pilot project for evaluations in Brazil on the exploration of unconventional oil and gas ("shale") for the Program of Investment Partnerships (PPI) of the federal government.

Called a "transparent well", the project aims to produce knowledge about the feasibility of using onshore resources of low permeability reservoirs (unconventional).

The initiative is part of a plan by the Ministry of Mines and Energy (MME) to revitalize oil and gas exploration in land areas. However, the project has more expensive extraction than normal and offers more environmental risks. Therefore, its extraction ends up requiring that oil prices are at a higher level to offer financial return.
