The natural gas thermoelectric plant should start operating in 2024 in the Quarry district, south of Sao Paulo. The construction of the unit was authorized this week by Governor Geraldo Alckmin (PSDB) and will be the responsibility of the Emae (Metropolitan Water and Energy company), the Secretariat of Energy and Mining and the company Gasen.
According to the government, currently, Sao Paulo imports 63% of the electricity it consumes. With the future plant, the state expects to obtain energy security for the metropolitan area of Sao Paulo. The estimate is that the thermal park consumes about 6 million cubic meters of natural gas per day.
The consortium should undertake the environmental, technical and economic feasibility studies of the plant, obtaining the prior license, elaboration of the business plan, contracting of suppliers, negotiation of the supply of natural gas and participation in a future auction Carried out by Aneel.
"After the approval of environmental licenses, Emae and Gasen will form an SPE (company of specific purpose), which is responsible for the construction, operation and maintenance of the plant," said the government of the state of São Paulo.
With an estimated power of 1600 megawatts (MW), the unit will be built next to the Piratininga and Fernando Gasparian plants and use technologies in the generation thermoelectric natural gas, which causes low emission of pollutants.
Thermal Quarry Park
The project, called the Thermal Park Quarry, started in July 2015 with the launch of the announcement for the implantation of plants in partnership with the private sector. The Emae received 15 manifestations of interest, totaling 21 projects.
The site in which the unit will be built already has two plants plants: Piratininga (Emae) and Fernando Gasparian (Petrobras), which have, together, 580 MW of installed capacity, in addition to the quarrying plant, which has a reversible unit, Able to function as much as energy generating as a water pump.
