Oil organization approves new member country

The accession of the Congo was approved during a meeting in Vienna. The goal is for the country to become the third largest producer in Africa.

The Republic of Congo, one of Africa's leading oil producers, joined the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC), said the organization in a statement this Friday.

"The conference considered the Congo's request to join the organization and decided to approve its admission with immediate effect," said OPEC in a statement.

The Government of the Congo said in January that it wanted to join OPEC as it advances with new projects that could help the country become the third largest oil producer in sub-Saharan Africa, with a goal of 350,000 barrels a day this year. Source: Exam.
