What does the offshore professional need to know?

The offshore market is very broad and the trend is that over the years it grows increasingly. The branch, however, has its specialties and, therefore, it is necessary to know some points that are not addressed in the day-to-day and invest in a correct way.

The first essential point is security. Working on the high seas requires great care, since the risk of fatal accidents is large. For this, it must be fulfilled all the requirements and laws indicated by the National Agency of Petroleum, Natural Gas and Biofuels (ANP) and the federal government.

The second is the importance of knowing how to speak a second language, in the most specific case the English, because most of the expressions used in the branch are of the universal language. Moreover the market requires and is something paramount for the professional of the area. Here are some expressions and their meanings in Portuguese:

Biofuels — biofuels;

Bunker — fuel to supply ships;

Downstream — refining and distributing derivatives;

Upstream – Exploration and production of crude oil and natural gas;

Midstream – Commodities storage, transportation and marketing;

EPC (engineering, Procurement and construction) — company or group of companies that are responsible for executing the phases of a project, as well as acquiring materials and contracting services to build a work;

Floating, production, storage and Offloading (FPSO) — a floating unit of oil production, storage and transfer, based on a ship;

FPU (Floating production unit) — Floating production unit;

Bottom-Up methodology — this is a methodology for emission inventory that uses information on energy and fuel consumption of each source, so that it is possible to manage each individual’s individualized management;

QAV — aviation kerosene;

Safety procedures;

Top-down — methodology that uses consolidated information on total energy and fuel consumption in an installation or set of facilities.
